Interface and Error String Customization Toolkit must create and synchronize
the directories that it will use for processing. </span>
 </div>
<div class="section"><h2 class="title sectiontitle">First-Time Processing</h2>  <p class="p">When you customize
the text for the first time, Cognos UI
and Error String Customization Toolkit processes the input resource
files as follows:</p>
 <ul class="ul"><li class="li">The synchronization directory and the reference directory are
automatically created in the location you specified during configuration
for the <var class="keyword varname">Synchronization_Directory</var> and <var class="keyword varname">Reference_Directory</var> variables.</li>
<li class="li">Resource files are automatically copied from the source directory
to both the synchronization directory and the reference directory. <p class="p">The
file names in both directories include the target locale strings.
For example, if you specified fr and es as your <var class="keyword varname">Target_Locale</var> variables
during configuration, the file names will contain these locale strings.</p>
 </li>
<li class="li">Resource files in the reference directory are automatically renamed
to include the _REF suffix in their name. <p class="p">For example, a file named <span class="ph filepath">CAM_AAA_es.xml</span> becomes <span class="ph filepath">CAM_AAA_es_REF.xml</span>. </p>
 </li>
<li class="li">A customize attribute is added to the string elements in your
resource files in the synchronization directory. The value of this
attribute is set to new <a class="xref" href="ug_ldk_c_translateattribute.html#translateAttribute" title="An attribute that identifies strings that must be translated or otherwise modified.">translate Attribute</a>.<p class="p">For
subsequent customization projects, the value of this attribute is
set to new or changed. </p>
