  53. the messages and user interface text in IBM Cognos Business Intelligence
  54. products. </span>

  56. <p class="p">You can use it when you translate the text strings into another
  57. language or when you modify the existing language version of the text. </p>
  58. <div class="note note"><span class="notetitle">Note:</span> Not all Cognos Business
  59. Intelligence products can be localized using the Cognos User Interface and Error String Customization
  60. Toolkit. In particular, you cannot customize the IBM Cognos Cube
  61. Designer or the IBM Cognos Dynamic Query Analyzer.</div>
  62. <p class="p">You cannot use Cognos UI
  63. and Error String Customization Toolkit to change the branding of a
  64. product, such as names, logos, tag lines, or trademarks. Please refer
  65. to the product documentation to find out how to deal with branding.</p>
  66. <p class="p">The text strings that you customize are located in the XML resource
  67. files (<a class="xref" href="ug_ldk_c_inputresourcefiles.html#InputResourceFiles" title="Input resource files are XML files that contain message strings, such as error messages and warnings, as well as menu text and user interface text.">Input Resource Files</a>)
  68. in the <span class="ph filepath"><var class="keyword varname"> installation_location</var>/msgsdk</span> directory.
  69. The structure of the resource files is defined by the schema file
  70. named CCLMessageFile.xsd, located in the same directory. For more
  71. information about the names of files to customize and their descriptions,
  72. see <a class="xref" href="ug_ldk_c_filestolocalizeincognosreportnet.html#FilestoLocalizeinCognosReportNet" title="The following is a list of files in IBM Cognos Business Intelligence that you must customize and their descriptions. These files are located in installation_location/msgsdk.   74. of the product (<a class="xref" href="ug_ldk_t_localizingsubsequentversionsofaproduct.html#LocalizingSubsequentVersionsofaProduct" title="If a new version or a patch for a IBM Cognos product contains changes to the messages or user interface text, you must customize the resource files again.   75. Toolkit keeps track of changes made to the text strings in different
  76. releases of the product and identifies the strings that are new or
  77. changed. For the next release, you can easily find and customize only
  78. those strings. This helps to reduce your customization costs.</p>
  79. <p class="p"> Cognos UI and Error String
  80. Customization Toolkit uses a set of directories to manage the customization
  81. process over several iterations. You specify names and locations for
  82. these directories when you configure Cognos UI
  83. and Error String Customization Toolkit. </p>
  84. <p class="p">The following flowchart illustrates the customization process and
  85. shows the directories involved.</p>

  92. codes are inserted in the file names, and the text for customization

  94. <li class="li">A user customizes the text strings in the synchronization directory.</li>

  96. String Customization Toolkit validates the files in the synchronization
  97. directory.</li>

  99. String Customization Toolkit generates the final output in the target
  100. directory.</li>
  101. <li class="li">A user copies the generated output to a computer where the product
  102. is installed.</li>

  106. the original input resource files that were copied from the msgsdk
  107. directory. The source language, which is either English, French, German,
  108. or Japanese, is specified in the name of the files. You must copy
  109. all input resource files for the product from the <span class="ph filepath"><var class="keyword varname">installation_location</var>/msgsdk</span> directory
  110. and its subdirectories to the source directory.</p>
  111. <p class="p">You create
  112. the source directory manually. </p>

  114. <div class="section"><h2 class="title sectiontitle">Reference Directory </h2> <p class="p">This directory contains
  115. copies of the latest input resource files. They will be used during
  116. the next customization project to determine which messages were added
  117. or updated. The target language is specified in the name of the files.</p>

  121. <div class="section"><h2 class="title sectiontitle">Synchronization Directory </h2> <p class="p">This directory
  122. contains the resource files that you use to customize the text. The
  123. target language is specified in the name of the files. Initially,
  124. these files are copies of the original input resource files. In subsequent
  125. versions of the product, new messages are added, obsolete messages
  126. are deleted, and updated messages are flagged for your attention.</p>

  131. the generated output in a format required by the product. You can
