in the files that are located in the synchronization directory. </span>

<p class="p">Modify the strings that contain the translate attribute (translate="new"
or translate="changed").</p>
<p class="p">The synchronization directory is your customization directory.
The files in this directory contain the text to be customized. Use
a file with the proper locale string to make your changes. For example,
the synchronization directory contains files named <span class="ph filepath">CAM_AAA_es.xml</span> and <span class="ph filepath">CAM_AAA_it.xml</span>.
Use the <span class="ph filepath">CAM_AAA_es.xml</span> file to translate the
text to Spanish, and use the <span class="ph filepath">CAM_AAA_it.xml</span> file
to translate the text to Italian.</p>
<p class="p">The files in the reference directory are used as a reference for
subsequent customization projects, and you must not edit them. For
example, the synchronization directory contains a file named <a name="fnsrc_1" href="#fntarg_1"><sup>1</sup></a>,
and the reference directory contains a file named <span class="ph filepath">CAM_AAA_fr_REF.xml</span>.
To customize the text, use the <span class="ph filepath">CAM_AAA_fr.xml</span> file
in the synchronization directory.</p>
<p class="p">You may want to customize the files that are translated by reusing
the existing, translated versions of files. Specify the same source
and target locales during configuration. For example, to retranslate
the French version, specify fr for both the source locale and the
target locale.</p>
<p class="p">Alternatively, you may want to retranslate files. For example,
to retranslate the French version, specify en for the source locale
and fr for the target locale. Perform the steps in this topic, and
then manually copy the French version of the files to the synchronization
directory. The English version generated by IBM® Cognos® UI
and Error String Customization Toolkit is overwritten.</p>
<p class="p">Ensure that you back up the files in your synchronization and reference
directories for subsequent customization projects.</p>
<p class="p">You should be familiar with the structure of the <a class="xref" href="ug_ldk_c_inputresourcefiles.html#InputResourceFiles" title="Input resource files are XML files that contain message strings, such as error messages and warnings, as well as menu text and user interface text.">input
resource files</a>.</p>
<p class="p">You must already have <a class="xref" href="ug_ldk_c_prepareinputresourcefilesforlocalization.html#PrepareInputResourceFilesforLocalization" title="Before you can start customizing text, IBM Cognos User Interface and Error String Customization Toolkit must create and synchronize the directories that it will use for processing.">prepared the resource files for customization</a>.</p>
