text.</span>

<div class="tasklabel"><h2 class="sectiontitle tasklabel">Procedure</h2></div><ol class="ol steps"><li class="li step stepexpand"><span class="ph cmd">In an XML editor, open a file in the synchronization directory.</span>  <p class="p">You can determine if a file contains a new or changed string
by viewing the log file created in the location that you specified
for the <var class="keyword varname">Log_File</var> variable during configuration <a class="xref" href="ug_ldk_c_configurelocalizationkit.html#ConfigureLocalizationKit" title="You must configure IBM Cognos User Interface and Error String Customization Toolkit before you start using it.">Configure Cognos UI and Error String Customization Toolkit</a>.</p>
 </li>
<li class="li step stepexpand"><span class="ph cmd">Customize the strings that are identified by the translate
attributes as new or changed.</span>  <p class="p">We recommend that you
manually delete the <a class="xref" href="ug_ldk_c_translateattribute.html#translateAttribute" title="An attribute that identifies strings that must be translated or otherwise modified.">translate
attributes</a> after you modify each string. </p>
 <div class="note important"><span class="importanttitle">Important:</span> Do not modify any text other than the strings.</div>
 </li>
<li class="li step stepexpand"><span class="ph cmd">Ensure that all strings in the file are customized.</span>  <div class="note tip"><span class="tiptitle">Tip:</span> Search for <samp class="ph codeph">new</samp> and <samp class="ph codeph">changed</samp>.</div>
 </li>
<li class="li step stepexpand"><span class="ph cmd">Save the file.</span></li>
<li class="li step stepexpand"><span class="ph cmd">Repeat steps 1 to 4 for each file in the synchronization
directory that has new or changed strings. </span></li>
<li class="li step stepexpand"><span class="ph cmd">If you did not already delete the translate attributes
manually, you can delete the translate attributes globally if either
of the following is true</span>  <ul class="ul"><li class="li">You are certain that all your strings are customized. If you delete
all your translate attributes before you finish customizing all the
strings, you may have problems finding the strings that were not customized.</li>
<li class="li">You want to customize only specific strings and do not want to
customize the remaining strings marked with the translate attribute.
If you customize the product, you may want to modify only some strings.
You find and modify the strings, review your changes, and then delete
all the translate attributes globally. </li>
</ul>
 <ul class="ul choices"><li class="li choice"><p class="p">For Windows operating
systems do the following:</p>
 <ol class="ol" type="a"><li class="li">From the <span class="ph uicontrol">Start</span> menu, click <span class="ph uicontrol">Programs</span>, <span class="ph uicontrol">IBM
Cognos 10</span>, <span class="ph uicontrol">Administration</span>, <span class="ph uicontrol">Advanced</span>.</li>
<li class="li">Click <span class="ph uicontrol">Clean Message Files</span>.<p class="p">The <span class="ph filepath">customize_clean.bat</span> file
located in the IBM Cognos User Interface and Error String Customization
Toolkit installation directory <span class="ph filepath"><var class="keyword varname">installation_location</var>\bin</span> runs.</p>
 </li>
</ol>
</li>
<li class="li choice"><p class="p">For UNIX or Linux operating systems, do the
following:</p>
<ol class="ol" type="a"><li class="li">Open a command line and go to the location where Cognos UI and Error String Customization Toolkit
is installed.</li>
<li class="li">Type <kbd class="ph userinput">//<var class="keyword varname">installation_location</var>/bin&gt;localize.sh
clean</kbd> </li>
</ol>
</li>
</ul>
 The processing may take a few minutes. After it is finished,
you can <a class="xref" href="ug_ldk_t_validatethelocalizedfiles.html#ValidatetheLocalizedFiles" title="Before you generate the target resource files, it is important to validate the customized files in the synchronization directory.">validate the customized files</a>. </li>
